Mahi Mania
Hi I am Liam, and oh do I have a story for you. We recently went on an adventurous cruise which I will talk about in a separate post. We booked a fishing charter a few weeks in advance to ensure we got a spot . There were many exiting fish that might be caught on the charter but the one that stood out to me was the mahi mahi. The mahi mahi is my dream fish to catch which is why I was so stoked to get to go on this charter. The charter was based out of the northern shores of the Dominican Republic.
It was the first stop of the cruise so thankfully I didn’t have to wait any longer. When the time finally came, I was bursting at the seams with the thought of catching my dream fish. I couldn’t help myself. We got onto the fishing boat and the water was a little wavy with some four to six foot swells. It was nothing I couldn’t handle if it meant a chance of catching the one and only mahi mahi. Soon after we left the marina we set the trolling lines with hopes for mahi. After the lines were set we settled in to the waiting game. The deck-hand offered fresh pineapple and sodas for our wait.
Within thirty minutes one of the reels started screaming. We had the first mahi of the day. We were with some other people on the cruise so the first wasn’t mine but I was allowed the second. It was an absolutely beautiful fish and got me excited to catch mine. In another forty five minutes to a hour (I didn’t keep track of time) I had my mahi, or so I thought. The mahi hit the lure so hard the reel backlashed and the fish was lost to the ocean. I was lucky to get another shot at catching a mahi mahi because there were other people on the boat.
Then about twenty to thirty minutes later I was hooked into a mahi mahi for real this time! I was handed the rod and it felt too good to be true. That fish fought harder than any other fish I have ever caught. When it got near the boat it jumped lots, and you could see the amazing colors on the fish. The fish was gaffed then brought aboard. It was such a beautiful fish and I was so happy. The pictures were taken then it was put in the cooler to flop around with other fish. I was so exited I played the whole thing multiple times over in my head. Then I stared out into the ocean and thought about how lucky I am to be able to do this.
Then the others got turns and we were talking to one of them, whose name is Sye. He was really nice. He he said he fishies fairly often, and when he fishes with his dad whoever loses has to hold a minnow in the picture. I found this funny and will press this when I win the day! Sye ended up catching the baby mahi and I caught the largest so when we got ashore we had a comparison picture. When we looked at the picture it looked like he was holding the minnow compared to mine. Once we were done taking more pictures we headed back to the ship for ice cream.
