A New Season…

Not only is there a new spring season gradually arriving, we are definitely in a brand new season here on the farm.  While I have been completely retired since we moved here in July of 2019, Mike has still been working.  However, he is now also retired.  Sometimes, thankfully, you come to a point where you just quickly make a decision and then in retrospect, fully realize that it was very good timing.  We think that is the situation with this. Now that we have had a few days to start becoming accustomed to the reality of it, we are easily slipping into more of a routine.  Of course, we will not be bored any time soon.  There are so many projects and so much regular upkeep around the house that it’s more a matter of narrowing the focus to what needs to be done first.

I am sitting out on our front porch and it is a little after 6pm.  Not too long ago it was completely dark at this time.  The days lengthen so gradually that you have to stop and remember when you began to notice it.  The birds are looking for places to nest, the deer are hungry and the bucks are losing their antlers.  The bird watching is more interesting as we see new types of birds that are coming through on their travels.  The days are getting a little warmer and we see just a tiny bit of grass, or maybe they are just weeds,  turning from brown to light green more and more every day.

Today we planted some carrot and parsley seeds in the new and larger garden area down by our pond.  This is all experimental.  We know that the deer will most likely really enjoy it more than we do but we also don’t even know how well the seeds will germinate.  This is an older way of gardening that Mike’s father did many years ago.  We will try it this way by starting seeds outside and see what happens but know that in time we may build a greenhouse to start seeds earlier.

So while everything outside is starting a new season, so we are also ourselves and we are happy about it all.  Rhythm is everywhere and while our’s is a new one, we look for clues to settle in right where we belong.
